Top four from Novels that earn their length

The Remains of the Day

A butler drives across England and slowly reveals what he did not say for thirty years. The whole novel is subtext, and it is the best example of it in English.

Kazuo Ishiguroliterary · short

9.1

One Hundred Years of Solitude

Seven generations, the same names, and a town that keeps forgetting itself. Hard work in the first fifty pages and unforgettable after that.

Gabriel García Márquezliterary · magical-realism

9.1

Beloved

Slavery told through a haunting rather than a chronology, which is the only way the book could get near it. Dense, and worth reading twice.

Toni Morrisonliterary · american

9.0

Stoner

The life of an unremarkable academic, told plainly, and it lands harder than most epics. Rediscovered decades after publication for the right reason.
